Ductless systems can operate using 25% to 50% less energy than electric resistance and forced air systems making them energy efficient. They allow the user to control each heating/cooling zone independently, eliminating the costly over-heating and cooling common to central air systems. Ductless systems use inverter-driven variable speed compressors that allow the system to maintain constant indoor temperatures by running continuously at higher or lower speeds. This allows the system to ramp-up or down without great losses in operating efficiency. Ductless systems have ultra-high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios (SEER) between 16 and 22.
Some Signs your Ductless System Needs Service
Drop in Output – A decline in the amount of warm or cool air that your ductless system can put out is not a good sign. Typically, this is the result of a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system.
No power – If the ductless system refuses to turn on at all, it could be experiencing severe problems.
Higher bills – Due to the fact that ductless systems are energy efficient, you shouldn’t have high electricity bills if your home is ductless. Sometimes, an indoor unit will appear to work just fine, but an internal problem can force it to work harder to do its job, causing a higher monthly bill.
Ice – Normally, a defrost cycle works to keep the ice from building up too high. If the cycle malfunctions, however, the ice could completely cover the unit and cause a breakdown.
Fluid Leaks – The refrigerant levels in your ductless system shouldn’t change because the refrigerant cycles through the coils without ever leaving them. If a leak develops, the ductless system can no longer effectively control temperature.
